On-line chat rooms setting up deceitful liasons,
Clandestine meetings in dark hotel rooms,
Pornographic images slowly taking bondage one’s mind.
These are the stereotypes of unfaithfulness that come readily to most of us, leaving a taste of disgust in our mouths.
As well they should.
Yet these are the ripened fruit of disloyalty and betrayal.
We err if we note, hate and steer away only these end results.
(Though Satan will persuade us ardently otherwise.)
And this desire (for another) is usually preceded by allowed lack of desire (discontent) with the present.
And it is at this level we must do due diligence.
- Do I allow discontent w/my own marital/single status to linger?
- Do I feed my mind with imaginations past my own God-ordained situation?
- Do I look over the fence at another pasture, noting w/duty “I’m committed to the pasture I’m in but Oh, what a sacrifice this is…!”?
- Do I harbor cynicism, bitterness or discontent as I focus on the disappointment, the monotony, or the burden of my present circumstances?
- Do I question the wisdom, the fairness, or the goodness of God in this?
Here waits the smirking, smug sower of evil seed.
And Satan can be an incredibly patient sower, knowing the passing of time with enough seeds of discontent will prepare vulnerable soil for Infidelity’s attitude & actions.
And the rotting fruit of this sin….DEATH.
Death of all that God created in His good gift of Fidelity.
Death of God’s intent for good, glory and delight in Faithfulness.
Death of the clear image of God’s love for His church in the metaphor of marriage
Death of fellowship with God in the precious communion of trust, obedience and faith.
May God enable us to hate it in all its ugliness.
From the seeds which beckon attention in our own hearts…
To the full blossom of its toxic leaves in betrayal and unfaithfulness.
God, in his goodness and wisdom, offers us and calls us to so much more!
