What Do I Think About God?

“What a person thinks about God is the most important thing about him.” A.W. Tozer

This quote has been on my refrigerator since I came across it several weeks ago. Note it is not IF A PERSON thinks about God or THAT ONE NEEDS TO think about God.
No, the assumption is that we all do. (Even for the atheist, he thinks God doesn’t exist.)
The point is that ACCURACY & TRUTH in how we think is important. And the reason it is so critical is that it impacts everything else about who we are and the way we live.

I find this truth powerful and provocative.

(However I think about God, I will relate to him from that perspective.)

And so it becomes important to consider….
  • Do I think of God as distant and unrelated to everyday life?
  • Do I think of God as in control of the big things, but not the small?
  • How do I see God in the dark hours, the painful scenes?
  • What do I believe about God & the evil that is done around me, or to me?
  • What do I know about God’s love for me?
  • Is God’s interest in me primarily in what I do, how I act, what I accomplish?

The answers to these sorts of questions define what is truly important.

What I believe to be true about God affects how I will live and how I will interact with Him.

I reflected on Ps 103 recently, and it gave me much to consider in this topic of who God is.

 Join me in considering…

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”

God is worthy of my praise, blessing, and gratitude;  God abundantly, daily gives to me His gifts.

“Who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy…”

God does not hold me responsible for my sins (guilt is gone!), heals in His sovereign plan & discretion, transforms life in a pit to one of hope & promise, who lavishes me with love that is constant even when I do not deserve it.

“who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s”

God produces in me godly contentment with His good designs, preventing and protecting me from harmful appetites I might pursue to my own peril. In this satisfaction I am renewed, made whole, strengthened like the majesty of an eagle’s soaring upward flight…

“The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.”

God is not oblivious nor unconcerned with those who suffer under the cruel, bullying hand of others. Whether happening across the world or across the table, He will make things just, in His time, in the best way.

“He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel.”

He is a God who speaks, who reveals Himself...in his perfect wisdom and timing. He does not leave us in the dark about what we need to know about who He is or what He does. We can rest both in what He does reveal and in what He chooses not to make clear.

“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love”

God overflows with tender, gentle, patient love (for me) that never, ever ends!

(And on & on the chapter goes….)

Wow!! When I think these thoughts about God, I am impacted in such amazing ways!

Praise. Thankfulness. Worship.  Obedience. Love. Hope. Joy.

Help me, Lord, to think your (true, right, Biblical) thoughts after you. And keep me from interpreting myself, my world, or You based on my own faulty circumstances, reasoning or judgements."

What do you think about God?
